Drake Rocks Upstate New York With Second-Ever Solo Gig

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but it does kind of feel like Canadian singer/ rapper Drake (real name: Aubrey Drake Graham) has arrived.

He appeared in “Degrassi: The Next Generation” and has recently crossed over from acting to focus on music — and check out this week’s Mixtape Monday to see just how well he’s doing. He joined Lil Wayne on his I Am Music Tour, and his recent mixtape, So Far Gone (featuring Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Bun B and Omarion), is stirring up a buzz.

On Friday night, Drake performed at SUNY Purchase just north of New York City. The DJ got started at around 10 p.m. as a few audience members asked around, “Who is Drake? What does he sing?” They wouldn’t be wondering for long.

Drake came onstage rapping, “My name is Drizzy and I ain’t perfect but I work hard, so I deserve it” — and then several snippets of Lil Wayne songs were played to get the crowd’s attention. It worked, but from there the show was all about Drake — who admitted that Friday was only his second solo show and told the crowd appreciated the support.

Drake performed with the stage lights dimmed, which put the focus on his lyrics more than on him. Songs from the set included “Congratulations,” “Sooner Than Later” and “Successful,” but the tracks the crowd loved most were “Best I Ever Had” and “Every Girl.” The crowd chanted “Drake!” as he said goodnight and walked offstage.

And sure enough, some of those same people who were wondering who Drake was before the show were saying things like, “He’s the truth! Did you hear his lyrics?” and “He does have great lyrics like Wayne.”

Whether Drake is the next big thing or not, we’re looking forward to the release of his major-label debut, Thank Me Later, later this year.
