The Producer Behind Lil Wayne’s New Collaboration With Eminem

VIBE-Chase_N_Crawford
Chase N Cashe

Check out this interview VIBE did with the producer of Lil Wayne’s “Drop The World“. This is by far one the best interviews I have read in a long time.

Meet the producer behind Lil Wayne’s new dream collabo with Eminem.

Just four years ago, Jesse “Chase N. Cashe” Woodard was a high school student escaping to Hollywood from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Now the self-taught beatsmith is getting his big break with the recently leaked “Drop the World,” co-produced with his partner Hit-Boy, both of whom work under producer extraordinaire Polow Da Don’s Zone 4 imprint. They’ve also got their own crew, Surf Club, which Chase describes as a Dipset/NERD mix.

VIBE: How did you end up meeting Lil Wayne?

Chase N. Cashe: My peers. A lot of my good friends are actually within the Young Money clique, then through other interactions in the industry. He did the shit for Keri [Hilson, who's also under Zone 4] so I bump into him at shoots and stuff. But really you gotta get to Wayne through his people.

How did you go from meeting his crew to working with him?

The whole thing stemmed from his engineer KY. Me and KY are cool from back when we lived in Atlanta. KY is a fan of our stuff and was like, “Man, Wayne need some new shit for the YM album and Rebirth.” He hit me on Twitter [Laughs]. I sent like five [beats] and four got used. Three went to the Young Money album. And then one to Rebirth. The other one got danced to by Omarion on World Star [Hip-Hop] when he was on Young Money.

How long did it take Wayne to respond?

Maybe like a month I got word back that he did the songs… Me and Hit-Boy had the beat for a minute. My people from Def Jam hit me for some shit that was hard. But we didn’t make the cut, but I used to play the beat all the time to myself and be like, Wayne would kill this. Never thought of Eminem, though.

Did you think, “This is hot!” or did you feel blasé’ about the beat?

When I heard Em’s verse, I forgot I made the beat [Laughs]. The whole song is complemented by all who worked on it. Everyone did their part. Even how Em did the mini bridge, he had to really feel the beat… Everyone was waiting on Em verse. Like, they knew he was gonna get on it, but no one heard the verse. I really didn’t react until the leak. You know how the game goes, especially with the shit getting pushed back every Tuesday.

So Wayne and Em were not in the studio together when they made the song?

Nah, I don’t think so. You see how Wayne works. He might’ve did his verse on the bus or in Wal-Mart, wherever he’s standing at the time.

Wayne has been campaigning to do a song with Eminem for a long time!

Funny how a N.O. nigga supplies the beat.

Has it hit you yet that you just had a hand in producing a mega track for two of the biggest rappers on the globe?

Yeah. But I don’t have a track with Hov or Kanye yet. And I want to get Drake and J. Cole on a track. I just want to be the cornerstone of this new shit. –Linda Hobbs

Lil Wayne Is MTV News’ #5 Man Of The Year

lil-wayne-mic

All this week, MTV has been unveiling there top 9 men and women of 2009, and today they announced that Lil Wayne was #5 man of the year.

Check it out below.

Despite legal troubles and looming jail time, Wayne fostered the hottest clique in hip-hop and featured on songs from Madonna to Drake, all the while still dropping mixtapes.

His name should be “Mammoth Wayne.” Lil Wayne is going into 2010 just like he went into 2009: on top of the music game. MTV News’ 2008 Man of the Year’s star is so huge and shines so bright that he’s remained a entertainment focal point — breaking touring records for a hip-hop act despite not releasing Rebirth, his much delayed follow-up to last year’s Tha Carter III. The New Orleans Fireman was more popular than most artists who boasted #1 albums; with hit singles, an endless string of guest appearances, introducing rap’s hottest new clique and dropping another classic mixtape.

2009 Highlights: Staying humble but still riding high off of his 2008 Man of the Year win, Wayne sideswiped a potential rap battle with 50 Cent by refusing to engage the G-Unit General, but continuing to do what put in him a preeminent position: make music and perform it for the people. His I Am Music Tour with the likes of T-Pain and Keri Hilson was a huge critical and commercial success. But Wayne’s biggest live show would happen in February at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. Weezy, Jay-Z, Kanye and T.I. stole the program with a historic performance of “Swagga Like Us” only for Wayne to return to the same stage later to rep for his hometown with “Tie My Hands.” Wayne was nominated for eight Grammys and left with three, including Best Hip-Hop Album.

February was also a pivotal month in that his musical collaborator and Young Money clique member, Drake, released the mixtape So Far Gone. Drake, our #8 Man of the Year nominee, went on to be the hip-hop rookie of the year with two hit singles and two Grammy nominations. Drake officially became a Young Money artist in late June. Wayne took his entire camp — which includes another budding rap star, Nicki Minaj — out on tour this summer for the America’s Most Wanted Music Festival. That outing and his I Am Music Tour earned a combined record-breaking tally of over $42 million.

Outside of music, Wayne had plenty to keep him busy. BCD Music Group, an independent distribution company based in Texas, put him in the middle of a lawsuit against mixtape king DJ Drama, while Wayne was in full support of a lawsuit to stop the distribution of the documentary “Tha Carter”, which was produced by QD3. In yet another lawsuit, Wayne sued producer Mali Boi for failing to clear a sample of singer Karma-Ann Swanepoel’s “Once.” The folk singer sued Wayne for copyright infringement for use of “Once” on Wayne’s “I Feel Like Dying.” Of course, Wayne’s most troubling court proceedings dealt with his gun-possession case. In October, the acclaimed performer pleaded guilty to gun possession. Weezy is scheduled for sentencing in February, where he is expected to receive one year in jail.

Despite impending prison time, Wayne’s appeal has reached well into the mainstream. He’s had guest appearances on tracks from Madonna to Drake to Cash Money member Jay Sean. Weezy also appeared on ESPN multiple times (also serving as a celebrity blogger for the sports channel), went bowling with Katie Couric for a primetime special and had his own “Behind the Music” episode.

As 2009 came to an end, Wayne — who came in second on MTV News’ Hip-Hop Brain Trust’s Hottest MCs List — dropped his impeccable No Ceilings mixtape. The free CD was meant as a thank-you to all the fans who supported him throughout the year. Meanwhile, as Wayne gears up for the release of the We Are Young Money LP on December 21, he’s still drumming up attention for Rebirth — “Drop the World,” featuring Eminem, was just leaked to the Net Monday.

Amazon Ships Out Rebirth Album Too Early

rebirth

Amazon has definitely dropped the ball big time by shipping out copies of Lil Wayne’s highly anticipated Rebirth album. Amazon apparently shipped out the Rebirth album to a number of fans months before it was ever supposed to be released. I can only assume that this happened because of all the push-backs and confusion regarding the release date, however this is still unacceptable and its going to be a huge blow to Universal and Cash Money.

Regardless please make sure to go support Lil Wayne and actually buy the album when it comes out.

Short Dawg Signs To Lil Wayne’s Label, Readies Debut LP [Video]

Houston native Short Dawg has been flying back and forth from his hometown to Atlanta and Miami — anywhere he has to go to record, he gets it in. Short was signed to Def Jam back in 2005 as part of the Russell Simmons Music Group, and later moved over to So So Def when Jermaine Dupri had an executive seat with the company. After years of waiting, nothing ever happened, and he was finally granted his release.

In 2007 Short became friends with Lil Wayne and, with no label contracts binding him, finally signed to Young Money a few months ago.

“I’m definitely on that album — you know I gotta be on that thing,” he said about appearing on the We Are Young Money compilation, due December 21.

“It was an ‘about time’-type thing,” he added about officially signing. “We all been cool. Everybody’s been seeing me. We all been hanging on tour buses, going out of town together. Me and Wayne did the ‘Hurricane Season’ movie together. We were out there in New Orleans together for, like, three months. Everybody embraced me. They were happy to have me over here with them. It’s all love over there, one big strong family. All talented people.”

Like family members Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga, Short (the name comes from his high school basketball days when he stood at 4-foot-11) also sings in addition to rapping, and insisted fans will get a taste of both on his still-untitled solo debut.

“You gonna learn that I’m not just a rapper,” he said about his LP. “I love alternative music. I give you a taste of my alternative side.” In fact, one of his alter egos is Elvis Freshly.

“Me and my creative thoughts came up with an alter ego … something for the ladies,” he said. “I got the blue suede shoes and everything. I ain’t got no grease for the scalp to make my bangs come out though.”

DJ Toomp and Kwamé are among the more established names producing the LP — which has been recorded over the last four years — while various Young Money members along with Akon, Pimp C and Bun B are guest-starring. There’s also another cameo appearance that people will be looking forward to hearing: Too Short. The Oakland legend had the nickname “Short Dog” all the way back in the ’80s, but the younger Short Dawg says the Bay Area O.G. gave his blessing several years ago to use the moniker.

Short Dawg’s new mixtape, Southern Flame Spitta Vol. 3, is out now. Props to MTV, are y’all glad that Short Dawg has joined the Young Money family?

Snoop Dogg Speaks On Lil Wayne Going To Jail

snoop-wayne

Rapper Snoop Dogg has become the latest person to offer his opinion and feedback on Lil Wayne’s upcoming jail bid. Check out what the godfather had to say down below.

“Rappers going to jail is like athletes using steroids: It’s gonna happen. [But] I feel like the rappers that are getting caught up in going to jail don’t have anybody going ‘ay, we ain’t going there. That ain’t going happen tonight.’ It’s them in control until they lose control. I say to all the rappers out there that’s getting caught up in trouble: just be a little smarter, a little slicker. You just gotta know how to move.” (New York Magazine)
